Inside the Studio: Where All My Paintings Begin and End

It’s About Time I Started Blogging – And What Better Way to Begin Than with a Look Inside My Art Studio?

Hello, hello!~ I thought it finally time to get the blogs going and I couldn't think of a better one to start with that than giving an inside look into my beloved space. My studio has come a long way since the early days and it's been a process since my taste has evolved so much over the years.

Back in our old apartment, my husband and I shared an upstairs loft that doubled as our office and my makeshift painting space. It was a humble little corner — and honestly, I didn’t have much in the way of tools or supplies. At the time, painting was more of a hobby, something I turned to only when I had some free time. I didn’t take it seriously… at least, not back then.

In fact, I probably had more embroidery and fiber art supplies (cue the flashback to my old happimood account) than actual painting materials. Most of my brushes and paints were leftovers from my college days.

Looking at these photos make me feel so nostalgic, and a nice reminder that we all start somewhere, someplace. I will admit, we had fabulous natural lighting in this old apartment. In the late afternoon, as the sun began to set, it would cast the warmest, most comforting glow across the whole space.

Honestly, I think that chapter of my life might’ve been one of the happiest. I was freshly graduated, working full-time as a floral designer, running a small side hustle, and surrounded by a great group of friends — and, of course, my partner.

(I've always loved this photo, but those giant globs of paint make me cringe now HA!)

Flash forward to 5 years later, Jeff (my husband) and I move to a new place — a sweet little cottage-style two bedroom home where I had the chance to reimagine my studio from the ground up. I spent months browsing Pinterest (you can find my Art Studio Inspiration Pinterest board here), trying to pin down the perfect balance between aesthetic and function. I wanted a space that looked beautiful but didn’t compromise on efficiency — after all, it still needed to work for me. And I took this "hobby" more seriously than ever.

We had beautiful rich brown flooring all across the house and I wanted to play into that.

For this main corner, I sold my old easel on Facebook Marketplace and sourced a new one (for only $75!) from there as well. I also found this beautiful antique secretary desk that had a pull out table with drawers and inside storage for further organization (also from Facebook Marketplace for a steal).

I knew I wanted to organize my oil paints in a neater way, instead of me throwing them in a bin and calling it a day. Which, no hate to anyone that does, but I found myself getting paint EVERYWHERE since it would always leak, caps would be lost and, in general, it was difficult to find the exact color I needed without digging through the entire bin. This made the whole painting process less efficient for me.

So I got this peg board from Home Depot and binder clips just from my local office supply store.

If you know me well, you know I'm a bibliophile (I'll be making future posts about this — books I've read, my TBR list, my favorites, etc). Books are my answer to everything and it would be very UN-like me if I did not have some in my studio space since there's book in every room of our house (you can see my video post here as proof).

Of course, majority are art books and "How To Do's". You might be wondering why would I have some graphic design, Science, and Adobe Photoshop / Illustrator books here.

It's always handy to have some knowledge in digital art — especially when you have to build a website portfolio, an online store to sell your art, and prepping your artwork for prints. But what about science? I believe everything always ties together in life and sometimes as an artist, you can pull inspiration from unlikely places. Also, that particular book was gifted to me by my stepfather years ago over our shared bond of the movie “Interstellar”, so it’s a precious item in general.

Last, but certainly not least, my handy dandy little rolling cart that contains the rest of my supplies: more brushes, oil mediums, varnish, tape, gloves, etc.

And that’s a wrap! Maybe in a future post, I’ll show the other side of the room — technically my “office” space. It’s nothing too exciting (just a desk and a computer setup), but it’s super useful when I’m prepping my work for print. Actually… that might make a great topic for the next blog post!
